How to Travel with Children of Different Ages? Dos and Don’ts of Managing Toddlers, Teens, and Everyone in Between

How to Travel with Children of Different Ages? Dos and Don’ts of Managing Toddlers, Teens, and Everyone in Between

To plan an enjoyable holiday, you need to understand what your kids like, respect their needs, and consider their preferences. These needs and preferences vary drastically from one age group to another. And let’s not forget that every kid is different. At times, it can be a little challenging for you to meet everyone’s requirements, especially if one of your kids is a sulking teenager and the other a hyperactive toddler.  To make traveling with teens and managing toddlers easier for you, we have broken it down into tiny bite-sized pieces. Here are some tips and tricks for travel with children of different ages:

1.    Newborns

This is probably the hardest age group to travel with. Typically, babies between 0 to 9 months fall under this category. Kids this age need constant attention and pampering. If you have a kid under 3 months old, pediatrics suggest it is not wise to plan long car rides with your baby.

However, in case you have to, bring baby food, changing pads, diapers, car seats, change of clothing, and extra blankets with you. Never feed your baby while the car is on the road as it can increase the risk of aspiration and choking. While traveling with a newborn, the best advice we can give you is to stay calm and collected. Your little one may keep you awake for the entire night and scream your ears off to the point of frustration. The key is to be prepared for every scenario.

2.    Toddlers

Travelling with a little one in tow? Toddlers usually have a shorter attention span and need constant stimulation. Therefore, for managing toddlers you should plan a trip with frequent stops and shorter drive times. Constantly sitting in a car seat isn’t only dangerous for developing bones and muscles, but it will also cause discomfort for your toddler.

Make sure that you give your toddler enough time to stretch his leg and move around. Choose interactive destinations that are easier to navigate on the stroller.

Look for museums, aquariums, and zoos to keep your kid entertained. San Diego, California is a great holiday destination for families with toddlers. There are plenty of water parks, campsites, and interactive museums for your little ones. Farms are also great for toddlers. You can spend time petting animals, picking fresh flowers, and enjoying quaint farm life. Head to Midwestern during fall. For instance, Wisconsin city is brimming with cider mills, where your toddler will be the happiest picking out the largest pumpkin and snacking on fresh donuts.

If you don’t have an RV, now is a great time to rent one and take your toddler along on a fun camp night. Kids this age enjoy nature and love exploring kid-friendly trails and managing toddlers is easy when they are busy exploring.

3.    Elementary Aged Children

Utilize school breaks to your advantage, and take your elementary-aged children on a fun science trip. Kids this age are quick learners and they need to witness things in real life that they have been studying in schools.

Here are some vacation ideas for elementary-aged kids:

  • Head to Boston, the birthplace of the American Revolution. Allow your kids to immerse in US history and explore the historic city of Washington D.C.
  • You can also visit Central Florida, where your family can discover the secrets of space at Kennedy Space Center. You can also find plenty of amazing science museums that will teach budding learners about concepts of physics in such a fun way that they won’t even realize they are learning.
  • If your kid enjoys nature, Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Canyon are great picks for elementary-aged kids.

4.     Teens and Tweens

Travel with Children of Different Ages

Teens are tweens are harder to impress and are always ready to take on new adventures. So, you should plan a trip that will allow you to bond as a family in an environment that will fuel their passion –for instance, sports, fashion, or even technology.

However, while traveling with teens, you need to put some loose restrictions on screen time. We know that it is impossible for teenagers to go without their phones for a long duration. You can let them connect with friends back home whenever they get the chance but also make them realize when is the time to put their phones down and enjoy their surroundings.

If your teen has a newfound passion for art and inspiring cuisines, take them on city tours teeming with culture and plenty of opportunities for artistic exploration. You can take them to New York City for a show on Broadway or catch a venue concert in Brooklyn. After a fun night, stroll along food streets and let them explore the culinary delights of Long Island’s North Folk.

However, for teens who have a thirst for big thrills, you can visit destinations like Alaska where you can take off on a helicopter to hike a glacier, search for wildlife among unspoiled rainforests, and hop abroad a dog-sled. Kids this age love a little luxury, book a suite or a hotel that has amenities like a swimming pool, games, and social activities.  This will help you when you plan to travel with children of different ages, as who doesn’t like adventure.

While on a family trip with kids of different ages, it is important to consider everyone’s likes and dislikes. This is the key to planning a perfect trip. Make sure that you squeeze in different kinds of activities for both your tweens and toddlers. Last but not least, remember to lose the reins and let your kids enjoy.
